Avalanche

History

Avalanche was originally developed by Champ Games for Atari back in 2007, based on the arcade game of the same name.  The 2600 version was intended to be included on a future version of their Flashback console, but unfortunately, the deal fell through and the game was shelved.  In 2020, with the help of Thomas Jentzsch, additional features were added to the game while keeping the ROM size at 4K, and Avalanche was released through the AtariAge store.

In 2024, Atari reached out to Champ Games and asked if we would be interested in publishing Avalanche through Atari.  A deal was settled on, and Champ Games spent a couple weeks adding new features to the existing code, such as:

  • a new 'EXPERT' skill level
  • updated graphics
  • an option to have the rocks move left and right as they descend
  • tweaks to the lower skill levels to make the game more accessible to novice players.

We are pleased to announce that the game is now officially licensed and is available exclusively from Atari as a physical cartridge.  Please see below for more details.

About the Game

Emergency!  A call has just come in and an impending avalanche is about to destroy the local town.  Rush to the scene and maneuver the shields to stop the crushing boulders and be the hero!

The inspiration for the classic Atari game Kaboom!, Avalanche features the same type of frenetic game play and precise control using the Atari paddle controllers.

Do you have the skills to stop the avalanche?

GOOD LUCK!
